when we chopped silage with our 4010 we serviced the clutch regularly sometimes tightened it up 3 times a week if the feed was tall.

On another note the 10 series PTO clutchs are all lever force fed, not spring fed like a Normal clutch plate or a 20 series, so when your clutch wears you need to tighten it up mechanically so that when the PTO lever is pushed forward and it goes over center it applys enough pressure on the clutch plate to engage, ( I don't think this is your problem) always remember a 10 series PTO requires a lot more grease than 20 series because of the bearing doing all the work during PTO operation. I suppose it would be possible that the load spring that forces the shaft out into gear could be broken and letting the shifter just float in between gears (if this is worn enough to be possible) I say all this to let you know you might have to check the small shaft and make sure it moves easily and freely in and out of the transmission to shift. always tighten it down by hand and then if it doesn't push in easily turn the PTO by hand to make sure the SHIFTER HAS ENGAGED the next gear before forcing it.

NOW if your hired man changed speeds and just decided to start the four bolts on the pto adapter without the drilled out center and the gears are not meshed when he tightens it down IT WILL CAUSE A CATASTRAPHIC BENDING OR SWELLING OF THIS SMALL SHAFT. One of the speed adapters has a hole drilled in the middle of it that lets this small shaft inside the rotating assembly stay extended without touching it, The other speed adapter does not have a hole drilled in the center of the attaching end and it forces this small shaft to retract into the transmission case, THIS SHIFTS THE PTO SPEED in the transmission. Extending is not a problem usually, I suppose it is spring loaded to extend when the PTO shaft adapter is taken off.

The PTO speed shift gears when this shaft in the middle of the turning assembly extends or retracts. when the PTO adapter is unbolted from the transmission in the middle there is a shifter that is rather small shaft, or almost nearly a large straight wire. To understand how the 10 series tractors shift from 1000 to 540 when you replace the PTO shaft for the different speed.
